If you’ve discovered incorrect or outdated information on your Equifax business credit report, taking action quickly is essential. Unlike consumer credit, commercial credit bureaus like Equifax operate differently—and understanding their process can save you time, protect your business credibility, and even improve your financing opportunities.
At TrueBuild, we help thousands of small business owners successfully manage and improve their business credit files. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the exact steps you need to take to dispute and update information on your Equifax Commercial report.

Why Monitoring Your Equifax Business Credit Report Matters
Equifax is one of the three major commercial credit bureaus in the U.S. Your report with them can impact your ability to:
Qualify for vendor credit
Secure loans and lines of credit
Obtain leasing and insurance terms
Build your business credibility
Small errors or outdated information can cause issues that affect your score and how lenders view your business. That’s why it’s critical to stay on top of your file and address any discrepancies promptly.
Where to Access Your Equifax Business Report
While platforms like NAV or eCredable let you view your Equifax business report, they don’t allow you to dispute or update the information directly. To make official changes, Equifax requires a specific process involving a Research Request Form.
To start this process, you must email Equifax Commercial directly. This triggers their support workflow and provides you with the documentation needed to file a dispute or request updates.
How to Request the Equifax Research Request Form
Send an email to the Equifax Commercial division (we provide a template in TrueBuild’s member portal).
You will receive an automated response with a case number.
Within about 24 hours, you should receive an encrypted email containing:
Your full Equifax business credit report
The Research Request Form (as the last page of the report)
Note: If your company hasn’t had any Equifax inquiries within the last 60 days, you might receive only the Research Request Form.
To open the encrypted message:
Follow the secure message instructions
Input the verification code provided
Download the PDF attachments once unlocked
How to Complete the Research Request Form
Review your report carefully. Circle or cross out any inaccurate or negative information.
Locate the Research Request Form (last page of the report).
Fill in the required fields:
Company name
Account in question
Nature of the dispute (incorrect data, outdated info, etc.)
Pro Tip: If disputing multiple accounts, fill out the form once with the top section info, then make copies and fill in the specific details for each account.
Refer to examples available in your TrueBuild portal if you’re unsure how to complete any fields.
Submitting Your Dispute or Update Request
Scan and save your completed Research Request Form as a PDF.
Email the document back to Equifax using the instructions provided in the TrueBuild portal under “Equifax Dispute Request.”
Wait for confirmation from Equifax that your case is being processed.
Processing Timeline and What to Expect
Equifax typically takes about 30 days to investigate your dispute.
After review, they will email you the results of their investigation.
If successful, the corrected report will reflect the changes.
Requesting Updates vs. Filing Disputes
Disputes are for correcting inaccurate or false information. But what if you need to update your:
Phone number
Industry classification
Address
Equifax traditionally tells business owners to update this through their vendors. However, we’ve had success submitting these updates using the same Research Request Form method. While not guaranteed, many of our clients have seen updates processed this way.
Disclaimer: Success depends on the Equifax representative handling the case. Results may vary.
